Should I Buy a Crossover or a Sedan?

Should I Buy a Crossover or a Sedan?

If you're shopping for a new daily ride, you’ve got an overwhelming amount of options. However, there’s a good chance that you’ve probably already narrowed down your choices, but there’s one thing you can’t decide on: Do you want a crossover or a sedan? If you’re asking yourself that, you came to the right place.

What Do You Need?

The first step in answering this question is determining what your needs are. Whether it’s great gas mileage, a low price tag, safety features or practicality, knowing what you need is the first step in car shopping. By making a list of everything you need before you shop, the options will seem less overwhelming.

Differences and Similarities with Crossovers and Sedans

Despite obvious differences in size and style, crossovers and sedans are quite similar. Both are much more affordable than trucks or full-size SUVs, and it’s not hard to find a crossover or sedan that comes standard with a backup camera, Bluetooth® and excellent safety features. Additionally, many crossovers and sedans share the same engines and have similar handling.

However, there are several major differences, with the most obvious being cargo capacity. For example, the 2020 Ford Espace offers up to 65.4 cubic feet of cargo space, while the 2020 Ford Fusion only offers 16 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk. If you plan on carrying a lot of items, you’ll want to opt for a crossover.

Another difference is the gas mileage. Crossovers are much more practical, their gas mileage doesn’t quite compete with sedans. The 2020 Edge gets up to 29 MPG, but the 2019 Fiesta gets up to 35 MPG.

However, when it comes to versatility, crossovers have the advantage. Most can be bought with optional all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD), something that’s hard to find in a sedan. In fact, Ford’s entire crossover lineup (EcoSport, Escape and Edge) are all available with Intelligent 4WD. AWD and 4WD are necessary if you plan on driving off-road or drive in a lot of snow.

Crossovers and sedans also differ when it comes to the price tag. Both vehicles are typically budget-friendly, but sedans are often much cheaper. It’s easy to get a new sedan for less than $20,000, but according to Kelley Blue Book®, the average price for a small SUV like a crossover is $26,000. For example, the 2019 Ford Fiesta starts at $14,260, while the 2020 EcoSport starts at $20,485.

So Which One Should I Buy?

Choosing between a crossover or a sedan depends solely on your needs and your budget. There’s not a right or wrong answer here, especially with Ford’s lineup of new sedans and crossovers. Do your homework, schedule test drives and find the ride that best suits your needs.
