Quick Tips for De-Icing Your Windshield

Whenever frost, ice or snow accumulates on your car’s windshield, you need to de-ice your windshield before hitting the road. Here we have shared some quick tips for de-icing your windshield.

Don’t Do This

Many people follow the wrong methods of de-icing their windshields which can lead to permanent damage to the windshield. Here are things you should never do while de-icing your windshield:

  • You should never use a pointed tool or metal scraper to de-ice your windshield. Using metal or pointed objects to scrape off the ice could leave scratch marks that would affect the clarity of the vision through the windshield. Also, it will also affect the beauty of your car.

  • Don’t pour very hot water to de-ice the windshield. The sudden temperature change of the windshield could lead to cracks in the windshield surface. If anything like this happens, you have to change the windshield, which is an unnecessary expense.

How to De-Ice Windshield in the Right Way?

There are several ways to de-ice windshield safely. Here we have provided you two quick ways for de-icing your windshield.

Warm the Car

Start the engine and let it run in idle. Modern cars have an automatic control system. Select the defroster option in climate settings. Some cars have the electronic heating option of the windshield that can be useful to de-ice the windows. If your car doesn’t have this option, turn on the blower to full blast.

Use De-icing Spray

De-icing sprays can effectively melt frost, ice or snow accumulated on the windshield. You can prepare a de-icing solution at home by following the instructions given below.

Prepare Salt Water Solution

The saltwater solution can melt the ice accumulated on the windshield. The scientific reason behind this is the saltwater’s solution freezing temperature is much below the freezing temperature of freshwater. When the ice comes in contact with a saltwater solution, it starts to melt. To prepare a saltwater solution, fill water in a spray bottle and add two scoops of home salt. Shake the bottle to help the salt dissolve completely in the solution. Spray the saltwater solution on the windshield.

Prepare Isopropyl Alcohol Solution

The isopropyl alcohol solution works on the same principle as the saltwater solution. The freezing temperature of isopropyl alcohol is -89 degrees, which is much lower than the freezing temperature of water. When you spray isopropyl alcohol solution on the windshield, the ice starts to melt away. To prepare isopropyl alcohol solution, mix seven parts of isopropyl alcohol-water with one to two parts of water. Now, add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to this solution. Fill the solution in a spray bottle, and it is ready for de-icing your windshield.

Scrape Ice with Soft Squeegee

After the ice starts melting, use a soft squeegee to scrape the ice from the windshield.

De-icing the windshield should not be a problem for you when you follow the tips given above. There's nothing you can do to stop ice from accumulating on the windshield, but you can undoubtedly follow right de-icing steps that will help you save time and prevent any damage to the windshield.
